Future!Verse: when your children are in danger

April knew that one of her children were in danger. She didn't have to be near the bank where Dru was taken hostage to know it either. The one thing that prevented 'momma-bear' from doing anything was that her husband was on the scene, he was there to care for Dru and watch over her.

And in the end, things worked out that no shots were fired. Her eldest, Jon, was called in as the hero. And the gunmen were all arrested.

But not all was quite right in the Kent household. April sensed that something had happened with Dru's powers. Something that could affect her daughter, and the rest of the household too.

"She reached out to Jon?" Drake frowns slightly at that.

"I asked her to. I knew he could get there in time."

[destinyborn]

Drake gets that, and nods slightly. He glances over his shoulder as if trying to look downstairs.

"She wants him nearby tonight. Guess he should take my bed."

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"He doesn't have to. There's room for a chair in here, so he can sit by her bed. Unless you're uncomfortable with him being there."

"She is finally bonding. I shouldn't be upset about it." Drake fiddled with some of the wires. "But I still am."

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"Do you know why?" Clark can take a few guesses, but he doesn't want to lead Drake along, or make him second-guess himself.

[destinyborn]

Drake shrugged. "It was just Dru and me for a long time. It feels... sort of... like she is replacing me."

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"I guess I can see why you might feel that way, even if you know it isn't true. Can I share something with you?" Maybe if he offers up a related kind of story, one that shows he really does understand, it might help.

[destinyborn]

Drake pushes away the science project and turns to face his dad. "Share something with me?"

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"When my parents, your grandma and grandpa Kent, found me and took me in, they didn't know who my birth parents were. We were all each other had, and I always thought of them as my mom and dad. When I was fifteen, I was contacted by a man who said he could give me the answers, and tell me who my birth parents were. Mom and Dad didn't want me to go, because they thought that if I found out who my parents were and why they sent me away, I wouldn't think of them as my mom and dad anymore. That I'd replace them with my 'real' parents."

Drake felt a lot of connection with that story. He nodded in understanding. "But they were still your mom and dad. Just like you are still my dad."

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"Exactly. And once I made sure that they knew that wasn't true, they let me go. When I think of my parents today, I still think of them first. Finding out about Jor-El and Lara didn't change that. Instead of replacing my family, it just got a little bigger."

[destinyborn]

"I do love my family." Drake whispered. He remembers being alone. Having just Dru to depend on. And can't think of how different today could have been if Dru didn't have Clark there. Or Jon.

"I just... I don't know... still finding my place in it. Ya'Know?"

"Yeah, I do. Family can be a complicated kind of thing. Things can change when you aren't ready. And it's okay to be having trouble with that." That seems to be the message of the day, but it's a good one. Nothing Drake is feeling is wrong.

[destinyborn]

"I'm trying not to compare myself to him anymore. 'Cause I am me." Drake thinks he did the right thing. He walked away instead of over-reacting when he first walked in the door.

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"I wouldn't want you to be anyone else," Clark tells him, completely honestly. And while Drake's reaction downstairs was one that caused concern, it was definitely a better move than starting an argument or letting Jon know that he was feeling jealous. "You and your sister are both very special to me and your mother."

[destinyborn]

Drake ducked his head. Hiding the blush he felt from those words. "Thanks dad. I would never ask for another dad than you."

There is a quiet knock at the door. Dru has come upstairs to sleep. Jon will be with her.

Clark smiles, and puts a hand on Drake's shoulder, like his father used to do to him when he wanted to show silent support.

Jon opens the door cautiously. "Can I come in?" he asks Drake, respectful of his brother's privacy, even though he knows Dru wants him there. The room belongs to both of them, after all.

[destinyborn]

"Yah sure." Drake smiled.

Dru came in silently. She pushed a lock of hair from her face. "I screamed today."

"I know. I heard you." Drake admitted. He stood from his desk and went over to pull Dru into a hug. "I heard Jon protected you too."

[kentlings]

"I couldn't let her get hurt," Jon says. "I had to make sure she was safe for you." Dru's special to all of them, but he knows that Drake is especially close to her, and Jon's very motivated to keep that intact.

[destinyborn]

Dru hugs her twin tight. When Drake places his head on top of hers, he frowns. And looks at his brother and father in concern.

"That means a lot."

[kalel_ofkrypton]

Clark just sort of smiles. "Looks like you've got things well in hand. I'll be downstairs if you need me."

[destinyborn]

"Here you go Dru. Get into bed." Drake guided his sister to her bed.

"Jon can have my bed."

[kentlings]

"I don't want to kick you out. I can sit on the floor, or get a chair," Jon offers.

[destinyborn]

"I got a science project to finish. I will take it to the loft and crash there. Go ahead."
