Future!Verse: when your children are in danger

April knew that one of her children were in danger. She didn't have to be near the bank where Dru was taken hostage to know it either. The one thing that prevented 'momma-bear' from doing anything was that her husband was on the scene, he was there to care for Dru and watch over her.

And in the end, things worked out that no shots were fired. Her eldest, Jon, was called in as the hero. And the gunmen were all arrested.

But not all was quite right in the Kent household. April sensed that something had happened with Dru's powers. Something that could affect her daughter, and the rest of the household too.

Clark knows that April will know something happened when he arrives home, carrying Dru. Even if she didn't have the advantage of her powers.

At least she has the comfort of knowing that, physically anyway, they're both okay.

"We're home," Clark tells his daughter, only moments after they left the bank, though he doesn't put her down right away.

Dru nodded, but didn't move immediately from his arms.

April approached, touching her daughter's head. She bites her lower lip. "What happened?"

"We got caught up in a bit of trouble at the bank," Clark says, giving her the highlights over the bond, hoping to avoid traumatizing Dru any more than she is already.

April gently caressed Dru's hair lightly. She nodded as Clark shared the experience over the bond.

"Let's put her down for a little nap."

"Do you want one of us to stay with you when you go to sleep?" Clark asks his daughter. Especially after today, he wants her to have the choice.

"Can I have Jon?" Dru whispered softly. As if she shouldn't be asking for her big brother.

"Of course you can. He should be back soon."

[destinyborn]

"Juice?" Dru asked her mother. April nodded. It was close to supper time, but she figured Dru wouldn't eat much.

Clark is a bit concerned that the other children will catch on to something not being right, but does his best to keep it low-key, keeping Dru occupied until Jonathan comes home.

Which he does, a few minutes later. He has his bruised hand in one pocket of his hoodie, only a flash of color at his collar showing the makeshift costume underneath.

Jon is greeted at the door by his mother. She holds out a first-aid kit, before the other kids can rush downstairs.

"You did great today."

[kentlings]

"Thanks, Mom." There's not much he can do for bruises, but he knows it'll make her feel better if he at least ices it. Jon digs through the kit to find a snap-to-activate cold pack and binds it to his hand with a bandage. It'll be obvious, but it does feel better to have it against something cold.

"Dad showed you what happened?"

"He did. And I think I know what happened to the gunman who was harassing Dru." April glanced over her shoulder to where her daughter is now at the table, drinking a glass of juice.

Jon keeps his voice low. "He just... dropped like a stone."

[slayers_desire]

"His mind was shut off." April whispered back.

[kentlings]

Jon doesn't want to ask, but he needs to. "...permanently?"

[slayers_desire]

April pauses for a second, the signs aren't there that she is using her powers that used to be there when she was younger... but her son might know what she is doing.

"No. Not permanently. But he does have some damage."

[kentlings]

One one hand, relief. On the other... he closes his eyes a moment, and glances towards his sister. "Poor Dru..."

"I think she is confused about what happened. She is scared."

[kentlings]

"I would be too, if I were her."

[slayers_desire]

"She asked for you." April knows that Dru was most worried about upsetting her brother.

[kentlings]

"Guess I should go say hi, then." He hopes the bandage on his hand doesn't freak her out too much.

"Dru?"

[destinyborn]

Dru looks up to him. She still has fear in her eyes. "Hi Jon."

[kentlings]

"Hey. I made it home safe. And those guys are going to be put in jail for a good long while." He doesn't know how to reassure her about the other things. So he sticks to what he knows, for now.

[destinyborn]

"All of them?" She is asking about the one who held her captive.

[kentlings]

"All of them." He doesn't know how much medical attention the man will need. But at least he knows that it's unlikely he'd be unguarded, if he needed to be cared for indefinitely. If the police don't, the League will.
