It was midnight.

The perfect time for Dark Oak to be out hunting. There was no out at this time beside the ones she hunted anyway. They locked up the humans to control the streets. The Kandorians.

But they couldn't control her. She was the best one for the job when it came to an assassination, such as her goal for tonight. To get in and do the job without getting noticed and without leaving any trace of what happened.

One night at a time they attempted to reclaim their world. Tried to work against Zod and his army. And tried to reclaim the lives of thousands of innocent people.

And while she worked for a rebel team, Dark Oak still felt alone. Her heart felt heavy, ever since she and Clark got separated. Zod seemed determined in making Clark hurt... and Dark Oak did what she could to hurt Zod back.

The darkness was there again in her mind. And she had to take a moment to stop... and wait...

"I'd rather give you the chance to be free than stuck in that prison with me, and know that they would kill you." This isn't how he'd hoped this reunion would go. But then, a lot of things haven't exactly gone his way for a long time.

There is a chocked sob, and April turns to hold him to her. The pain of her heart spoke first. For the last year she had been living such a dark life. And the darkness got the better of her again. "I'm sorry. I should have seen this coming. I should have protected you."

Both of them are hurting, and there really is nothing that can fix this. Nothing except undoing the last year. But at least he can hold her, and hope that by sharing their pain, they can endure it. "It's not your fault."

She leans into him. Holding him feels so right in these dark times. He is her protector. Her comforter. Her strength. "I want this undone. I just want to be with you again."

"We have to get the Legion ring and send Lois back. No matter the cost." It's against everything he believes, his code of honor and his drive to keep everyone safe. But this time he has no choice. And the only thing that keeps him on this path is knowing that if they succeed, none of those lives will have been lost.

"Can I count on you to help me face Zod one last time?"

"Of course." After dealing with her hurt and pain, April feels a tug of other feelings for her husband. Of course love was always there. "When do we head into the heart of his territory?"

"As soon as Oliver's done, probably." Lois went to observe the burial of Tess, while Chloe took the opportunity to dig through Zod's belongings, and pocket some of the fruit from the elaborate and obscenely wasteful display of food. Both tasks seem to be drawing to a close.

"We can get into the city through one of the subway tunnels," Chloe says, coming to join them. "Most of them were caved in a long time ago, but we've been tunneling through. There's enough 'natural' kryptonite in the ground that the Kandorians leave it alone."

There is a part of her that wanted to be with him one last time, just in case this was their last mission. Just in case either of them met their end.

"Sounds good. Do we have our message that Lois will bring back?"

Clark feels the same. He just isn't sure if they have the time to spare. And if they have to travel by foot, or by being carried by her elementals, it may still take enough time that they will have to stop and rest.

"The solar tower," Clark says. "That's the key. She needs to make sure it never gets built. Without the tower, Zod has nothing."

"Then lets head out. It will be a long journey." April goes back into Dark Oak mode. That way, it is easier to think of the mission, instead of thinking of holding Clark.

"How long do your elementals last?" Clark asks as they head down to get Oliver and Lois, accompanied by the creatures.

"They can be active for a 24-hour period. Then the spell wears off."

"Convenient. I think they'll be a big help. Although when I go to face Zod, we might not be able to bring them with us." They can be used against Zod while the red sun remains, but as soon as Chloe takes down the tower, they'll be turned against him instead.

"No. Of course not. I think that by that time, the spell will be gone anyway. And it will just be you and him."

"And you."

She takes his hand. She wants to do more, but settles for taking his hand. "I told you... you aren't getting rid of me this time. I am not leaving your side."

((disappearing for a couple hours to help my dad with the house))

"I know. And I won't try to leave you behind."

"Thank you." There was so much more she wanted to say. To do. But... perhaps he needed more time.

When their team is assembled and ready to head out, Chloe passes out the stolen fruit. "Everyone eat up on the way. This may be your last chance, and we'll need to be on top of our game."

For Clark, this is the first real food he's had in months, and it takes a lot of self control to eat the apple one bite at a time.

He will be offered April's fruit too. She knows he was starved in the camps. And she... doesn't feed on this kind of food anymore. Doesn't need it to stay strong.

Even so, he hesitates to take it, not wanting to take more than his fair share. But he knows well enough that she hasn't been eating this kind of food for a while now. "Thank you."

She would not want to see it go to waste. And he needs his strength right now. "Agent Green killed a deer last night. So I don't need anything."

Oliver glances over at the sound of his codename, but swiftly decides it's none of his business, letting them have their privacy.

Clark eats her share a lot more slowly, waiting until they're underway, carried by her earth elementals. It's so strange to be surrounded by this much kryptonite and feel nothing, but right now he's grateful for the protection. And even though seeing the destruction of the countryside pains him to see it, at the same time it feels good to not be trapped behind barbed wire and wooden walls.

Traveling in silence, sitting so close to him and feeling too uncertain to touch him. Even though his touch is all she yearned since they were separated last year.

"Should I send one of the elementals to the farm camp?"

Part of him wants to tell her not to bother. That if they succeed in their mission, it won't matter. But if they fail, he doesn't think he could feel right leaving all those people there to suffer. And a stronger, growing part of him thinks that at least they can do some good before Lois goes back. They're here now, suffering. And it won't cost them anything to try.

"Send two."
