the kind of future you don't want to have ((future!verse))
It was midnight.
The perfect time for Dark Oak to be out hunting. There was no out at this time beside the ones she hunted anyway. They locked up the humans to control the streets. The Kandorians.
But they couldn't control her. She was the best one for the job when it came to an assassination, such as her goal for tonight. To get in and do the job without getting noticed and without leaving any trace of what happened.
One night at a time they attempted to reclaim their world. Tried to work against Zod and his army. And tried to reclaim the lives of thousands of innocent people.
And while she worked for a rebel team, Dark Oak still felt alone. Her heart felt heavy, ever since she and Clark got separated. Zod seemed determined in making Clark hurt... and Dark Oak did what she could to hurt Zod back.
The darkness was there again in her mind. And she had to take a moment to stop... and wait...

Lois gives them a bit of an odd look. "What're you two lovebirds smiling about?" she wonders out loud.
Clark only has one word for her. "Hope."

Looking over to Lois, April smiles softly. "You ready to save our world Lois?"

"We'll have a better chance sneaking into the city at night," Chloe says, leading the way into the narrow tunnels. Here and there, green kryptonite glitters in the red sunlight, embedded in the earth. "There's a small shelter in the middle of the tunnels. We'll camp there, then move out in the early morning, when it's still dark."

"I can lead the way. I see better in the darkness."

Inside the tunnels, there are small places where the kryptonite embedded in the walls light the way, glowing just enough to see, thanks to carefully placed vials of Kandorian blood. It will take several hours to get to the shelter, a bigger hollowed-out area with makeshift sleeping mats and battery-powered lanterns that they can activate temporarily for light at base camp.
It may be filthy and built out of junk, but it's a far cry from the farm prison. Just having something resembling a bed is better than Clark's had in a long time.

Her enhanced senses tune to the others, settling down. She keeps alert and awake for a little while.

Fortunately, Clark and April can speak without being overheard, and without keeping Lois awake once she does start to drift off. How're you feeling? He feels like he's asked that a lot today. But he can't help it.

You smell good.

This could be their last night together. And he intends to make it count.
He hasn't touched her in so long, but he still knows how to make her feel good, how to give her pleasure. And though there's a hint of desperation in his desire for her, he's focused on the here and now. On guaranteeing that their last memory of each other, if it comes to that, is one free of regret.

I love you Kal-El. I have always believed in you

Clark wishes they had the facilities to bathe before this, but there's no time and no water except the small amounts they have for drinking. So it's with a little reluctance that he puts on the same filthy clothes from before.

"Ready for this?" Clark asks April, reaching for her hand.
