in the darkness the baby comes

It is after midnight when April awakens suddenly in her bed. Her eyes glow red, as she surveys around the quiet bedroom. It is quiet outside ... the sound of crickets, the occasional howl of a coyote, the sorrowful call of the cows in the barn.

But none of those sounds grab her attention as the one right beside her ... the beating sound of Clark's heart as he sleeps.

She turns slightly to watch him sleep for a moment. April can feel her vampiric side taking control. The dark desires of her thirst swirling in her mind. Her attention directed to the pulsing vein at Clark's jugular. A hunger inside her that she has never felt before.

"Clark..." She manages to whisper his name. "Wake up..."

"The bond between us... is stronger than the first two were."

"It hurt... physically and spiritually... to be separated from him."

"Stronger? So he might already have your psychic powers, to some extent?" The other two children haven't shown any signs of that so far.

[slayers_desire]

"He might..." April looks over to where their son sleeps now. A little more contented for the moment.

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"He's early for a lot of things..." He follows her gaze, still worrying about the health of the baby, but trusting in the doctors. He looks back at her. "How are you doing?"

[slayers_desire]

April smiles sadly at him, knowing she doesn't have to answer for him to feel all the range of emotions inside of her.

"I am glad he is here. But it was a difficult night..."

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"That's an understatement." It does sadden him that, given the incredible difficulty they've had with this pregnancy and birth, this will be their last child together. There's no way he would put her through that again. They have three wonderful children already, and even if that's all they get, it's three more than he'd thought possible, all those years ago.

Clark looks over at Spike and Shasta. "Thank you for being here for us. We couldn't have done it without you."

"It was no problem..." Spike runs a hand through his hair.

"But... who was your doppelganger?"

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"Oh." Clark hadn't realized they didn't know about that yet. "He's an alternate of mine who was raised by Lionel Luthor instead of the Kents."

[slayers_desire]

"I told Clark to ask him to come... I truly believe without him... I would not have been able to stop drinking from Clark."

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"I knew it was going to be worse than before, but... that was really, really bad."

[slayers_desire]

April nods in agreement. "I don't know what I would have done..." She can't even think about it without tearing up.

He is pretty invulnerable... but she has lost him before.

[kalel_ofkrypton]

He can't just sit by and not hug her. "Hey, I'm okay."

[slayers_desire]

She embraces him tightly. "And what was worse... is when the baby was born... not being able to hold you."

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"You can hold me now." It's not quite the same, but it's helping him a lot.

[slayers_desire]

"I know..." She just doesn't want him to leave, even though that is not possible.

[kalel_ofkrypton]

At least he doesn't have to leave for the moment. And he hugs her a tiny bit tighter. "We're going to have quite the mess to clean up at home."

[slayers_desire]

"Maybe we can buy some new sheets?" She might want a whole change to the bedroom appearance, after being stuck in bed for the last few months.

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"Yeah, I think we might have to." Blood's hard enough to get out of fabric, and given that she'll be able to smell the traces long after they're clean, it just makes sense to throw them out and start over.

[slayers_desire]

"I won't be able to help with clean-up..." Since she is going to stay near William for the next week, here in the hospital.

"But... what would you think about a whole new bedroom design?"

[kalel_ofkrypton]

He frowns slightly. "How extensive are you thinking?"

[slayers_desire]

"Don't worry, nothing like taking down walls... or anything like that. Just a new paint job."

"We will have to rearrange the furniture for the bassinet."

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"I might be able to manage that."

[slayers_desire]

"That would be appreciated." April runs a hand through his hair softly.

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"Just let me know what you want. We've got a little time before we'll be bringing William home with us."

[slayers_desire]

"Its too bad the other kids will have to wait to meet him."
