a growing son, a happy family

It was another good day for April and Jonathan. Their growing infant was learning more words, which was good since they didn't have to explain the S'man as much anymore.

Right now, Jonathan was trying to play with Shelby. But the older dog was just lying there, as he rolled a ball towards her. And called out... "B'll!"

April watched with interest. Definitely there was a connection there, between infant and dog. But the disconnect was that Jonathan had a lot of energy, while Shelby did not.

"Should we get closer so Jonathan can see them or do we just leave them alone?"

"What do you think, Jonathan?" Clark asks their son. "Do you want to meet the cows?"

"Ow?" Jonathan looks around, wondering what daddy is talking about.

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"Sounds to me like that's a must." Clark opens the gate so they can pass through. Some of the cows look up briefly before turning their heads back down to the sparse winter grass.

"Ow?" Jonathan points at the strange creatures.

"That is right sweetie. Those are cows."

[kalel_ofkrypton]

Clark walks up to the closest one and pats it on the side. The cow barely reacts, used to people being near her, and familiar with Clark and April's scents. As far as she's concerned, this is right.

"They're big, aren't they?"

Jonathan reaches out his hand, will he be able to pet the strange animal too?

"Looks like someone wants to copy daddy."

He certainly will. The cow's fur is short and coarse, shaggy from the winter and getting ready to shed once the weather warms up. It doesn't feel like dog fur, but it's still warm underneath.

"Good thing the cows don't bite," Clark says with a chuckle. He's glad to be able to introduce Jonathan into the safe part of farm life, even before they're going to be living here again.

"They are accepting of him pretty good." April notes softly. She is glad to see her son bonding with the cow.

A faint sound catches Clark's attention, and he turns, seeing another person at the fence, watching them. When the boy sees who's in the field, he vaults the fence and approaches. "I didn't know you guys were coming into town!" Connor Kent says with a smile. It's been a while since they've seen him.

"Call it a surprise inspection," Clark says with a chuckle.

"We wanted Jonathan to see the farm, and the cows." April greets Connor with a smile. It is nice to see the young man doing so well.

"We're passing by on our way to pick out a new dog," Clark adds.

Connor frowns, already petting Shelby as the older dog comes up to greet him. "What's wrong with Shelby? Are you getting rid of him?"

"No. Of course not. But Shelby is getting older, and while he loves Jonathan, he doesn't have the energy to plat with a toddler."

Connor's frown is replaced with a smile as he understands that they aren't replacing the dog they have. "Wow, that's cool." He likes Shelby, and would take him in a heartbeat if for some reason his 'aunt' and 'uncle' couldn't take care of him.

Jonathan turns towards Connor, and points. "Hi!"

"Hi there," Connor returns, a little awkward, but eager to meet the kid. He saw Jonathan just after he was born, of course, but he imagines the baby doesn't remember that.

"This is your cousin Connor," Clark tells Jonathan, wondering what his son will make of the name.

Jonathan thinks over the new word for a long time. Then points... "Nor!"

April smirks. "He gets last syllables most of the time."

"He might get confused the next time we meet up with our other friend Connor," Clark says with a grin.

"How about Kon?" Connor asks, hoping the baby will pick up on it. It's the Kryptonian name that Clark let him have, although he won't be learning about his heritage in detail until after he's finished learning about his human side.

"Kon!" Jonathan picks it up very easily. He too is learning Kryptonian from his father. April wants the baby to know it now, while it will be easier for the infant to learn and keep learning.

Connor reaches out and shakes Jonathan's hand with his fingertips. "Good to meet you, Jonny."

"We shouldn't stay too long," Clark says, wishing that they could. He misses this place.

Jonathan does the typically tight squeeze of the fingertips with his tiny hands. But it won't hurt Connor at all.

"Ready to leave already?"

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"If we stay for too long, we might not make it back to Metropolis," Clark says with a smile, and gives his wife a kiss on the forehead. They've been away for a while, but this place is still Home. "And we have a puppy to get."

Connor looks a little disappointed too, but he understands. "I'm glad you guys could stop by. Can I come visit sometime? On the weekend, when I don't have school," he adds quickly before Clark can say anything.

April waits for Connor to amend his sentance too, before noticing. "Of course sweetie. Jonathan could use more familiar faces around."

Connor beams at them. "Great! I'll practice making the run into the city."

"Great Connor. It will be good to see you."

April moves forward to hug hum goodbye. It was great seeing him.
