a growing son, a happy family

It was another good day for April and Jonathan. Their growing infant was learning more words, which was good since they didn't have to explain the S'man as much anymore.

Right now, Jonathan was trying to play with Shelby. But the older dog was just lying there, as he rolled a ball towards her. And called out... "B'll!"

April watched with interest. Definitely there was a connection there, between infant and dog. But the disconnect was that Jonathan had a lot of energy, while Shelby did not.

"Hope you don't think that's going to be her name," Clark chuckles, giving the boy a kiss on the forehead. "Come on, Shelby."

The older dog trots along obediently at his side as they head to the elevator. The puppy is excited by this new place, squirming a bit, wanting to get down so she can run around and smell all the things she can find.

Jonathan is squirmy himself in daddy's arms. He wants to play with the new puppy. This is the best toy ever.

And once they are inside the apartment, April can finally set the puppy down.

The pup takes off the moment her paws touch the floor. There's so much to investigate! So many smells! She doesn't know where to start, and trips over her own feet more than once in her haste to smell absolutely everything. Fortunately, since the apartment is childproofed (at least for now), she can't get at anything breakable, though the garbage can seems to hold a lot of her interest.

Shelby watches her, following her from room to room as if he's appointed himself as her supervisor. He doesn't join in the frantic smell-fest, just sitting down and watching where she goes.

Clark doesn't put Jonathan down just yet, not wanting the puppy to knock him over in he enthusiasm. "Just a minute, buddy. Let's let her get calmed down first."

"She just needs to run around for a little bit, buddy." April touches Jonathan's head softly.

The puppy's energy seems to go on forever, just like children do, but eventually she slows down, her tail still wagging as she looks around. Clark deems it safe to put Jonathan down, and the pup's ears perk up. What's this? A new playmate? She doesn't quite pounce on him, but there is a lot of licking coming his way.

"Looks like she's settling in as well as we could expect," Clark says with a grin.

Jonathan laughs as the puppy licks him. He tries to hug her at the same time.

"We will have some adjustments."

Now that the pup is staying in one room, Shelby lies down, putting his head on his front paws and watching the two of them play. He wags his tail briefly when Clark looks in his direction. "Looks like Shelby wants a break."

"He had a long day." April gently scritches behind Shelby's ears.

His tail wags a little more at the attention. He wasn't worried that a new pup would mean he'd get ignored, but he definitely appreciates that they haven't forgotten about him.

"He's a good dog," Clark agrees. "And I'm sure he'll be up to keeping her out of trouble if we're not around, right boy?"

April slips Shelby a treat, while the puppy is distracted by Jonathan. "He already is keeping her out of trouble."

Shelby's tail thumps against the floor. He loves his people, and not only because they give him treats for seemingly no reason.

"We'll see how long it lasts." Clark's already started scouting out obedience schools for when the puppy is old enough to train.

April moves over to sit right beside Clark, her fingers gently stroke through his hair as she watches him do his research, with some amusement.

"Our family is growing."
