following a spool of thread (part one of four)

It all started with a spool of thread that April found in her room in the Rome villa. When she picked it up, she got flashes of visions about one of the Witches. The youngest... and April got the feeling that she could easily approach the youngest witch and talk to her. Without having to worry about an attack.

But it was still nice to arrive in Rome with Clark at her side.

Moving forward, April went into a zoned-out mood, where she followed her voices. Holding out the line of thread, she started to walk. Clark would have to ensure that she didn't bump into any people because she wasn't really paying attention to her surroundings.

He's very used to her use of powers now, and encircles her upper arm in one hand, using it to gently guide her around obstacles and people. He doesn't know where they're going, so he can't clear a path, but he can help escort her to wherever her voices are leading her.

They are making their way to Trinity College, a private university in Rome. April's voices lead her inside, where Clark would have to act more as an escort as they weaved around students leaving for the day.

Entering into a library, there was a girl sitting at a table alone, and that was where April was heading. Coming out of her vision as they stepped forward.

"I know you." April recognized her from the thread vision. This was the youngest Witch.

She looked up, studying both people with a curious look. "Yes. I guess you do."

Clark stands at her side, letting her take the initiative, but standing in support of her. "We don't want any trouble. Can we talk?"

The girl gestures for the two to sit. "I am known as Chloe."

"I know you are April. And you are Clark. And don't worry... I don't cause trouble."

Trusting her voices that Chloe spoke the truth, April sat down. "But you were one of the Witches that attacked me previously."

"You attacked first. Technically. By removing our magic on the Sins. I understand why you did it. But we had to protect our interests. At least, that is what Laura had said."

"One of your sisters?"

"The oldest. Aurora is the middle sister."

Clark's a bit startled by her name, because of the Chloe that he already knows. But he sits down across the table from her, next to April. "What are your interests?"

"History." Chloe laughs, as if there is something funny about that. A private joke that April and Clark wouldn't understand.

"It is my magic to know everything that has happened. To understand it."

"Is that how you know our names?" April was curious about that.

Chloe nodded in response. "And I know more about you both, from what has happened. So I guess it would only be fair that you get to ask all the questions you want about me."

Fair enough, and as long as she's willing, that helps. "Why did you summon the Sins?"

"I didn't. We did." Chloe knew it sounded strange. "Aurora wanted an Army, to protect us from harm."

Not a good enough answer for him. "Why?"

"Because we were going to get attacked. Our powers were still growing and we needed protection." Chloe closed her eyes for a second.

"The Powers That Be brought Champions. Aurora wanted our own Champions."

Clark glances at April, not wanting to dominate the conversation and feeling that she probably has important questions of her own. "It sounds like a self-fulfilling prophecy to me. Before the Sins started wreaking havoc, no one knew who you were. So far as I know."

"Aurora is the one who tells you what to do?" April asked softly.

"She has the magic of what will happen. She knows how to best prepare us for the future." Chloe answered.

"And your other sister?"

"The magic of what is happening. She will know that I am talking to you."

April looked down at the thread in her hands, then looked back up. "The Fates. Clotho. Lachesis and Atropos. You are the embodiment of the Fates."

Well. That puts a different spin on things. And a little light is shed on the symbolic significance of the thread, if nothing else. "What's this future you're supposed to be preparing for?"

"You are asking the wrong girl. I only see the past." Chloe responded.

"All this faith put into one person telling you what she sees?"

"I know that Clark has put his faith into your powers to see the future."

"But April tells me what she sees. And we make our decisions together." He frowns a little. "Your sister won't tell you what you're supposed to be getting ready for, and you just went along with it without questioning?"

"She is my sister. She has always known what we need to prepare for. Just like it has always been my decision to know the past." Chloe replied.

"The Fates have never influenced the world before. Why now?" April asked.

"I can not answer that."

"Why not?"

"To tell you the reason, I would need to know the future, and that is not my gift. My gift is knowing what has happened. We were born into humans to discover our greatness."

"By attacking others?" So far, he's not impressed by what he hears from her.

Chloe looks at him. "The Slayer attacks others. All those that claim to be Champions of the world attack others. They say it because they are defending someone or something."

"So are we. And yet we are evil."

"How do you know for certain that being on the side of the Powers That Be is necessary the right path? Just because they say so?"

"We were here first."

"Are you evil? Who says so? And what have you done that makes people say that?"

"Actually, every person, demon and vampire has elements of evil and good within them. I know even April has felt the touches of a darker side."

The young woman nodded at the statement. Knowing it was true. "But if we both are dealing with the same emotions, how are we so divided on different sides? I don't like fighting, nor want to fight you."

Chloe paused. "There was a time when we were free. When the Gods and Demons controlled the world. But then humans came and destroyed us. You were upset over having the Sins in a form... but that controlled them. If you are designated with one gift, than it becomes yours. I am the past. That is what I am. That is what I always am."

"How did it 'control' them?"

"It defined you. If you were the Goddess of Lust, then lust was your gift. You had no other gifts. Only that one."

"But that is so... one dimensional." April can't image being defined by one term. To live her life like that.

"Most humans don't believe the same. That is why they destroyed us. And when we fought back... the Powers That Be decided the humans needed Champions. But where are our Champions? Who protects us?"

"No one believes in me anymore." Chloe looked away sad.

"You think no one believes in the past?" Clark's sure he's missing something here.
