distractions for an concerned Watcher

For the most part, the last week of training with Rain had gone as normal, and the only thing out-of-ordinary had been the invitation to supper with April's mother. And it had been the conversation over the dinner table that sparked a little worry for April, knowing that her mother had to deal with threats from someone wishing her harm in Gotham.

Harley had urged that April just continue with her life as usual and not put any more thought into the news. Something that was easier said than done.

So to distract herself today, April thought that it was a good time to invite Nate over, and have him spar a little with Rain. At least it was better than sitting around and worrying -- which she had been doing for the last couple of moments while Rain meditated. So she send Nate a text message and hoped that he would soon respond and arrive.

"Because... to give Rain this moment... this moment with his family... I had to give up a part of myself. And... in a couple of minutes... I will be completely Vampire... and will have to be contained." April explained. "There is a solid metal container with chains in the training room."

Rain felt the gentle caress of his parent's touch on his hair and his face. "Who says we can not stay?"

"Uh..... okay. ... well is there anything I have to know? When's it safe to let you out? Is this thing on autopilot?" he was confused but started to walk to the training room.

"You can? But how? If you're really dead... I don't understand." Rain cried, confused.

April followed him. "As long as Rain stays in Limbo, I will remain a vampire. And for at least 72 hours afterwards when he returns... if he decides to return. It won't be safe to let me out until my soul returns."

"You can stay here with us as long as you need Rain." His mother said, stroking his hair.

"None of my business, but why the hell would you do this? I thought this was supposed to be a training exercise and you've reduced the kid to a quivering blob of sobbing jelly. From what I can see, you're his only comfort. When he comes outta there, he's gonna need you and you're gonna be all... rawr."

"No.. I can't. Why can't you come with me? I've got April, and training.. I can't stay here."

"He never had a chance to say goodbye to his family. I know how that feels... I never said goodbye to my father. And I wanted to give him some closure." April gives Nate the key to the metal cage. "I believe in Rain. He is more than just some kid. And he will be able to come out of this stronger."

"The dead are unable to return to the Earth, son. Unless you wish for us to be like those beasts you fight." His father explained. He gestured to the north, where a soft glowing light remained. "We are at peace. We are in Heaven."

Nate takes the key. "I'll let him know when he comes out that you're gonna be all crazy. Anything he should know about you like that?"

Rain sighs.

"I don't want you to leave. It's been so hard without you. I wish you could meet the wonderful woman I have...I wish.. so much."

"Yes. I still will have my mental abilities, and can be deceptive about my words and my emotions, just to be let out." Her eyes flashed red, as she stepped into the cage.

"We have met her, Rain. She brought us here, to be with you," His mother responded.

"I'll tell him. Would you rather I took the key with me and bring it back to him after the alotted time?"

Rain hugged them so tight.

"She did this for me?" He asks, surprised. "How? Can I see you any time I want? What did you think of her?"

"Mhhh good question. You decide what would be best." April closed her eyes, as the sensation of losing herself to the Beast came over herself.

"She gave up a piece of herself to bring us to you. And we are always with you Rain, in your heart and your mind." His father said. "And she seems wonderful, Rain."

Nate locked her in securely and backed away from the container, pocketing the keys. He would return them to Rain after the time was up. It was clear just from initial glances that the kid loved her and he might not be able to keep her in there.

"Thanks Dad." Rain said. Then he started to feel this gut wrenching cramp. The type he feels when vampires around but never really felt around April... but all of a sudden now he did. "Something's wrong." he said, touching his stomach with a groan.

There was a slight shift of her face, as the Beast took over April. And suddenly, with all her strength she struggled at the metal cage with a low growl.

Rain's mother touched him back, rubbing it softly. "Son... it is your girlfriend. She gave up a part of herself so that you can be with us. It is what you are sensing."

Nate backed off pretty damned quick. "What the fuck.." he had never seen anything like that except in movies.

"April. I've got to help her. She shouldn't have done this." he didn't know if it was permanent or what, but he didnt like the thought of her giving up anything for him.

A soft growl came from the Vampire. "Let me out..."

Rain's mother touched his face. "She loves you Rain. She wanted to give you a moment with us again. So you would know... we are very proud of you. And we love you."

Rain kissed his mother, hugged his father, then took Eve from their arms, hugging her and kissing her before handing her back. "I love you all and miss you so much. I'll never forget you." he backs slowly away, concerned for April.

Another struggled attempt at the cage, before the Vampire relized that would not work. "I will find a way out..."

As Rain left his parents, he felt an overwhelming amount of their love and pride. The whole area glowed with the light of their love. And then he was back in the training centre.

"Yeah... good luck with that." He turned when he saw Rain approaching.

"She said she'll be like this for a few days. Might wanna keep your distance. I'll bring the key back when it's safe to let her out."

Rain holds out his hand. "I think I can decide for myself when to let my girlfriend out of a cage. I'm not a moron."

He held his other, broken hand close to his body.

"I can take things from here, go home."

The Vampire in the cage, crossed her arms, not saying much as she watched the two men converse. With a flick, she called back her Beast form, and stared at them with blood-red eyes.
