first Christmas with Jonathan

It is Christmas. And April feels very excited for this particular holiday. She can't stop smiling, just thinking of how this is the first Christmas for Jonathan. And how the baby is currently staring at the glittering lights that she is hanging up around the apartment.

She has gone as child-friendly as possible. Hanging everything up and out of reach. There is a pile of presents under the tree, for everyone in the family.

All that is left to do, is to wait for Clark to arrive him. April even has some egg nog set out for him, to enjoy when he comes home.

The news doesn't stop over the holidays, so Clark has to put in a full day of work before he can head home. But he doesn't mind at all when he walks through the front door and sees the final results of April's holiday decorations. "Wow, this place looks fantastic."

"Thank you. Jonathan helped." April smiled. His son has a few scraps of wrapping paper in his hands. And a few scraps of garland behind his ears.

Clark smiles down at the boy. "You having fun decorating, buddy?"

Jonathan lifts his arms, babbling excitedly to see his father.

"I think he had the most fun with your gift."

[kalel_ofkrypton]

Clark obligingly picks him up, bringing him up to the grown-ups' world. "I'll bet he did."

Jonathan snuggles against Clark. Pulling at his tie slightly. He looks up at him with blue eyes. Pointing everywhere. Babbling excitedly.

"As you can tell, this has been an exciting day for him."

"Of course. It's his first Christmas." Clark doubts that Jonathan understands why things are different today, but he certainly notices that it is, and it's important to him to make this a good first Christmas for the baby.

April has even set out a small plate of cookies and a glass of milk for Santa (out of reach of the baby of course). A few breakable gifts were placed into the tree itself. While it looks like Jonathan might have tried opening a few of the gifts on the floor.

But she doesn't care. Tonight is about having Christmas with the family.

"I am cooking a chicken." Turkey is too big for their small family.

"I'm sure it'll be delicious." He gives her a kiss hello, glad to finally be home with his family. That's the one thing that matters most. And he dearly hopes that Superman will not be needed tonight.

April knows that even Superman has to work holidays. So right now, she will take the time with her husband that she can. And enjoy every moment of it.

Jonathan pulls on his tie again. Pointing at the Christmas tree. He is trying so hard to communicate something.

Even though Jonathan is not saying words just yet, Clark has taken to pretending that he is, talking to him as though they're having a conversation. "Yeah, it is pretty sparkly, isn't it? You did a great job helping Mommy decorate."

April talks to Jonathan all the time. It is one of the main things all the parent books agree on... early conversation helps with words. She also encourages the use of Kryptonian too, especially since the Nexus LOL that had effected Clark.

Jonathan stares at the tree for a moment. He likes all the colorful lights.

April checks on the chicken. "How was your day?"

"A bit busy. I had to do some running around town," he says, something that they've established as a safe code for Superman activities. "But it had quieted down by the time I left the office."

"I hope it was not too much running around." April knows that his demand is pretty high. But sometimes, she wishes for a quiet moment to the demand.

"It was nothing I couldn't handle." And maybe all his hard work earlier will repay him by allowing him to spend some time with his wife and son, here on Jonathan's first Christmas. "J'onn's volunteered to pull double duty if he's needed, so hopefully Superman won't be called again tonight."

"S'man!" Jonathan laughs. April blinks for a moment. That is something he has not said before.

Clark frowns down at their child, not sure that he heard that correctly. "Did I just imagine that?"

"Not unless we are sharing an imagination." April touches her sons head. He laughs again. And tugs on daddy's tie. "S'man!"

"And I always thought his first word would be something like 'Dada'," Clark says with a surprised chuckle.

[slayers_desire]

"That is usually the first word most children say." April agrees. Jonathan just laughs again. And states "S'man!"

"But it seems he is settled on this one."

[kalel_ofkrypton]

"I guess in a way he is saying my name," Clark says, with a wondering laugh. He's still not quite sure he believes his ears, but here it is, their son's first real word.

"Why wouldn't he? You are his favorite person." And one of the reasons April had expected 'dada'. But really, around the house, they either call him Clark or Superman.

"We'll have to work on him saying 'Mama' next," Clark says with a grin, looking down at the baby. "What do you think, buddy?"

Jonathan stares up at his father. "Mmmmm" He is trying to repeat the sound.

"That's pretty close." Clark kisses the baby's forehead, so proud of him for making this sort of progress. He doesn't expect that Jonathan will get the hang of it right away, but he said his first word, and he's so glad he was able to be home for that.
