reaching the end of the thread

With determination, April wiped away the tears of frustration that had appeared in her eyes after leaving the Smallville dimension. Destiny had come knocking at the worst possible time. Clark was doubting his future, after being encouraged to apply with the Daily Planet, and his own destiny was calling him to face against his once best friend. And April couldn't even be there for him. Couldn't even provide him the emotional support during his time of need -- all because her destiny had called to her.

And when it called, it demanded to be answered.
Even though it was night, it seemed darker in Rome when April returned to her home dimension. The spool of thread was held tightly in her hand, but she didn't need it or her voices to find Aurora. A green glow emitting from the center of the city signaled that the witch was up to something. And the vibes that April got that none of this was good.

The streets were quiet. There weren't even any signs of the vampires or demons that normally came out during the evening. Walking down the street towards the green glow, April knew with every step that this was the moment when she would have to rely on her strength to face one of the biggest challenges in her life. And even with that mental preparation, she still wasn't ready for what she found in the city center.

The other champions of her universe had already come, and were already captured. Her heart broke seeing familiar faces in magical chains, their skin taunt as a green glow drained their life force from them. None of them seemed to realize she was here either. Which made it harder to walk past them, ignoring their plight to head towards the source of the magic.

Closer to the city center April found the other two sisters -- Chloe and Laura were chained too and were being drained of their magic. They looks so weak and helpless and again her heart broke. But again her attention was diverted by the sight of Aurora, glowing green with the magic of the Third Evil. It was obvious that the witch had been overcome with the Evil that had seduced the Fate of the Future.

"Aurora...." April spoke softly. Mentally preparing herself to enter combat even as she closed the distance between the two of them.

"She is not here anymore, Child." Even the voice of the witch was different. Darker. Evil.

"You are the Third Evil." April wished she had a weapon. But also knew that no physical weapon would have helped her right now.

"It is a shame Child. You were created to release me and I waited for you. When you never came, I had to find another. She was imperfect, until I was able to use her to take power from her sisters too. And now I am all-powerful."

"Blah blah blah... I have heard this all before. I am going to stop you." April challenged.

"You can not stop your Past! Your Present! Your future!" A force of green energy surrounded April suddenly, and she felt swept up into the power of time itself. Lost in her past -- reliving every bad moment and every painful loss all over again. Then lost in the present, remembering all the faces of her friends and allies as their life force was drained away from them. Then lost in the future, where there was no future for Rome, just the Third Evil ruling over everything and everyone. And it was horrible.

She felt like she was falling. Past. Present. Future. Past. Present. Future.
She felt like there was no escape. Past. Present. Future. Past. Present. Future.
She felt like there was no good, just evil. Past. Present. Future. Past. Present...

"No!" April broke free of the time magic, falling to the ground gasping for air. She projected her mind powers out to protect herself from further magic cast by the Third Evil. Something was different. Time itself was different.

"My future is not what you design it to be... it is what I make it..." April stood up, holding up a hand to ward herself against the magic of the Third Evil. "You claimed your host wasn't perfect. And there is a way to defeat you."

"You will never find it. Already time has passed and I am stronger. More powerful." The Third Evil laughed in response.

April stepped forward and placed a hand on Aurora's body. "Be strong. Be free. I believe in you and faith is all that you need. I was told my whole life that I would open a great power... and I will tonight. I open the gifts of the Fates. Clotho. Lachesis. Atropos. Claims your gifts back and return to your rightful place in destiny."

Fighting back against April's words, the Third Evil covered her with the green glow of magical energy again. But this time April was ready, she channeled her power back at the Third Evil, her belief in the Fates and their gifts, her belief in herself, her belief in the Champions, and that good could conquer evil. And a white light surrounded her and fought back against the green glow of time magic.

Focusing on all her energy and lifeforce, April channeled the white light against the Third Evil with every fiber of her being. And she was overcome with an energy that she never felt before as the light expanded from her body and into the center of Rome. It broke free the green magical chains around the other Champions, and broke free the other witches, and it forced the Third Evil from the host of the witch known as Aurora. Magic continued to flow from April and she felt overwhelmed.

Forced from its host, the Third Evil hovered there, and attempted to take over the host it originally wanted -- April herself. It pushed hard, but she fought back harder. There was so much pain and darkness in the Third evil, and April knew that was not her life, and more importantly that was not her future. "I open up opportunities for Goodness, for Light, for everyone here to have their choice!" She again projected with all her mental powers, fighting against the overwhelming temptation of having ultimate power and magical energy.

The whole city center flashed with white light, and then slowly normal darkness of night returned. There was no more Third Evil, it had been defeated and returned back to a weakened state. For a moment the powers of Past, Present and Future existed in April, tempting her again with power and energy, but she knew that was not her destiny and she channeled those gifts back to the Witches. The gift of Past returned to Chloe, the gift of Present returned to Laura and the gift of Future returned to Aurora. The teen girls would not be as powerful as they were under the influence of the Third Evil, but they would still fulfill those roles in this dimension. And that was their destiny.

It would take time for the girls to accept that. April hoped they would come to her for help. But right now... she had to fall to her knees, exhausted by the magical energy she had extended to save the world. Sobbing softly -- April knew it was over but felt no relief. There was still much to be resolved in her world and it would take time. Much of that time had already been taken from her.

She was just so tired. And struggled to stay awake. But she didn't need to -- Chloe and Laura came to her side first, gesturing and supporting their sister to accept their new friend, and the three witches helped the Champions return the exhausted young girl to the Villa. There was much to discuss and much to apologize for... but they first ensured April was placed in a bed, and let the woman fall into slumber after fighting to save the world.

The lone figure of her father stayed behind when the others left to talk, and discuss how to fix Rome itself after everything that happened. The time magic used by the Third Evil meant that a total of six weeks had passed by in a blink of an eye. There was much to repair around the city of Rome, and the Champions would have to return to battle. But as Spike covered his daughter with a blanket, he knew that the most important battle had been won today by April. And softly, touching her head, and stroking her hair until she fell into that deep slumber, he was very proud of her. They all were. She had fulfilled her destiny.

And her world was safe again.
