"They did?" April is confused. "Your world seems on track to me."

"Maybe it's just a world difference kind of thing," he admits. "Most of my alternates that I've met have been really different. And people ask me about stuff I've never heard of that apparently I'm famous for. Although they were right about the Fortress."

"From what I understand there are at least three different versions of the Clark Kent world." There is a reason she doesn't say Superman right now.

"One... the comic world version that older Superman comes from."

"Two... a TV series version of an older you, working at the Daily Planet, with Lois, and has not as many weird Kryptonite related stuff."

"And three... your world. Which starts with a younger you, learning about your powers, and getting tested on a weekly basis."

"Just like the Buffyverse people had a different problem to deal with each week. The writers like to cause drama. Darn them."

"It does seem a little episodic sometimes," he agrees. "I'm just glad we get a break in between crises. It's time to recover from whatever horrible happened." Although he thinks Smallville is going to need a lot more time than in previous years to recover from this particular tragedy.

"Maybe one day, one of the writers will show up in the Nexus," he suggests. "And then we can convince them to write an episode where nothing happens but walks in the park and going out to eat with friends and family. I mean, sure, it'll be boring for the viewers, but I think we deserve it once in a while."

"There are happy episodes. From what I understand Chloe gets married. And you get to meet a whole lot of new heroes. And work with them."

"And no matter the difficulties... you have something other Clark's didn't... me." She snuggles close.

Clark's a little surprised to hear of Chloe marrying anyone, since she isn't even currently dating. But it gives him hope that she'll find someone. And, of course, hearing that he'll work with other heroes is also encouraging.

He wraps his arms around her a little more, with a smile. "That was the writer's biggest mistake. They didn't see you coming."

"I am your secret weapon." April nuzzles him again. "And you are mine."

Walking a little way, April's mind is working overtime to think of more things to distract Clark from his sorrow over being powerless. She stumbled upon something that might work.

"Hey... I bet there are tons of things that you have wanted to do... but felt you couldn't because of your powers. Lets do one tonight."

There are so many things that his powers have kept him from doing, not out of physical limitations (in most cases), but the threat of discovery. So many that his mind fills with possibilities and he doesn't know which one to choose. "What did you have in mind?"

"Tonight is about you, sweetheart." April smiles in return. She doesn't want to decide for him. "We could find a football game for you to play in."

"Only if you play too. I want today to be about us." They haven't been getting the chance to take time out as a couple lately, between everything going on.

"It would not be hard to find a mixed game." She smiles in return. There is lots they could do as a couple. "And that way... you would not have to worry about tackling me."

A hint of flirtation there.

"Not in front of other people, anyway," he says with a little grin. Not being severely serious is part of the point of this outing, and he's been missing the fun. Playing professional football would be fun, but also be far too serious and money- and fame-driven to make him truly happy. But playing a pick-up game with his girlfriend and random other people, just for the joy of playing? That's worth doing.

With a new goal in mind, April continued to walk with Clark until the Nexus provided them with what they were looking for. The game looked friendly enough, with both men and women in the field.

Heading to the field, April looks for someone who is organizing the game, and asks if Clark and she can join. Which they can.

"Excellent. Want to be one the same side?"

He gives her a light nudge to the shoulder. "Of course. We're in this together." He doesn't ask how much she knows about the rules, since they've watched tapes of some of his games together, and a lot of her questions were answered then.

Clark's used to being quarterback, and this being the Nexus, their chosen team allows him to fill that position. Even though he's sure that his dexterity isn't quite what it used to be, he's practiced enough that he thinks he can get away with it. And it's nice to not have the temptation to cheat, for once.

For April, she goes for a running back. It is a position that will take advantage of her enhanced speed and agility. Of course to be fair in the game, April will do the best to not use her abilities to the extreme.

This is all about having fun with Clark. And just enjoying the game.

Clark's guesses about his skills are pretty much spot-on. It takes him a few minutes to judge just how hard he needs to throw the ball, and how hard he can bump into others without hurting himself (and isn't that such a strange thing to be worried about), but then he's running and passing like a pro. Both teams have a mix of skill levels, but Clark makes sure not to play favorites to those who have more experience. Or those he loves, of which there is only one special person. Though he does tend to steer in her direction whenever he can, whether to pass the ball to her or just to watch her play.

And because of their connection to each other, during those times Clark does passes to her, April is always in the right spot to catch the ball. It does make her a bit of a target for tackles when others catch on. But luckily enough it is not a hard-tackle game.

By the third quarter, April has collected a nice bit of dust on her clothes. But she is laughing and having fun.

Clark's grateful when they call for a break before the last quarter. He's breathing hard, his back and shoulders punishing him a little for so much throwing so soon after all the heavy lifting he did, sorting through the debris at home. And he's acquired a few more bruises along the way. But for once, he doesn't mind. He's having fun, and he refuses to let anything ruin that.

He sits down on the grass, next to April, and flops over on his back. The sun doesn't feel the same as it did before, but it's still pleasantly warm, and the rest makes his overworked muscles feel better. He's still smiling. "This was a good idea."

"Later I can give you a back massage." She suggested. Knowing that in his current state he would appreciate it.

"Speaking of things my powers prevented, huh?" he says, but it definitely sounds like a good thing. While they were able to do something, at least, as far as touching goes, the kind of deeper massage that requires muscle involvement was always beyond them. So he feels he's definitely going to appreciate the chance to experience it.

Although that does lead him to another thought. "Victor suggested some things to learn, in case I'm like this for a while. Like how to defend myself without powers."

"That is an excellent idea. Leave it to the brilliant mind of Victor and her knowledge of being a hero without powers." April grinned. It was those kind of heroes that deserved a certain amount of more respect in her books.

Clark is in agreement. With people like him, who can go up against most bad guys and not risk getting hurt, people without powers are at a serious disadvantage. And it takes a lot more courage to face superpowered people as a normal person than it does when you know you can't be hurt. "Maybe once things settle down, you can give me some more pointers."

"Anytime you want. We could also run you ragged tonight... so you can sleep decent when we go to bed." April gently refers to his recurring nightmares.

He groans softly. "I think I'm gonna be plenty worn out already. Let's ease me into the whole... human body thing." He's already had a few times where he's amazed he hasn't just dropped from exhaustion, but human bodies are tougher than he assumed. At least, now that he feels what they have to go through.

"I do not think they will care if we leave the game before it is finished. They seem to have lots of extras on the sidelines." April gently moved her hands onto his shoulders. And her fingers gently started to knead some tense muscles.
