it could only happen to her

One never knows what the Nexus will throw at them. Be it alternates. People from the future. People from the past. Interesting people. Or just random wackiness.

Unfortunately for April, she has stumbled upon another Nexus LOL. And awakens this particular morning as not herself.

Instead, April is now a white-tailed deer. Things could get interesting...

Beside her in the bed lies a red kangaroo (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/22/Kangur.rudy.drs.jpg), and whether Clark's form gained this particular shape is due to his thoughts of Australia or not may never be answered. His ears flick back as he wakes up, and he quickly comes to full alertness because his ears shouldn't do that.

The bed definitely seems smaller this morning, and deer!April yawns as she wakens. Blinking her eyes open, she spots the kangaroo in her bed.

And snorts in surprise.

Wait? Snorts? That wakes her up further.

Clark is startled by the deer, and tries to get up. He tumbles out of the bed and drags most of the sheets down with him, as they're caught on his paws and tail, and he makes a loud grunting sound as he hits the floor. Nothing is making any sense, and he thrashes to free himself, kicking out with those powerful hind legs and accidentally ripping the sheets.

Oops.

That is loud sounds. Deer!April doesn't like loud sounds. She attempts to scamper into a corner, but her own legs get twisted on the other end of the sheets. It is fortunate that the kangaroo ripped them, else that would have been bad.

Her ears twitch, and her heart beats fast. She doesn't know what is going on.

Kangaroo!Clark catches on rather quickly when he notices his front paws, and stops struggling, craning his now-longer neck down to take a good look at himself. What.

He'd expect this in the Nexus, but he's never heard of anyone being LOLed at home.

He uses his rather handlike front paws to disentangle himself as much as he can, and stands up, flicking his ears forward as he looks for April. "April?" he tries to say, but it comes out as more of a tut-tut sound.

Deer!April is still trying to figure out how to stand on four legs. It is like watching a baby fawn stand for its first time -- as she struggles a couple of time before finding her footing on the bed.

She knows that something has happened, and tries to figure out exactly what she has been turned into. Her own head turning this way and that way.

When the Kangaroo makes that strange sound, her attention returns to it. Was it asking for her? It almost sounded like her name. Deer!April makes a soft sound, its a contact call, as she tries to call out for Clark.

He thumps a foot against the floor in frustration at not being able to communicate, not even thinking about it, and uses all fours to lope a little closer. His tail catches something on the nightstand and sweeps it to the floor, but it doesn't break so he doesn't pay any attention. He feels like an idiot, a little, but there's nothing else he seems to be able to do and he's not used to having a tail, dammit.

He grunts in response when she calls him, his ears fixed forward and aimed at her, showing his complete attention. The hell is this?

It had never occured to deer!April that she still might have her gifts, even in this strange form. And so the familiar thought-voice from the Kangaroo definitely catches her attention.

She scampers forward on the bed towards the Kangaroo. Clark. What happened?

Thank God, they can still talk. The kangaroo sags slightly in relief, settling back on his haunches. I don't know. I just woke up. With both of their panic subsiding, he looks her over more thoroughly. Why are you a deer? Why am I a kangaroo, of all things? This isn't the Nexus.

It is still weird to be in this situation, but the familiar thought-voices were able to calm deer!April down. And she nuzzles the side of the kangaroo's long neck.

I don't know. Maybe we brought something home?

He sniffs at her fur, and she still smells like April, just... as a deer. It's bizarre, yet helps ground him a little.

I've never heard of this happening.

She's still a little wrapped in the sheets, mostly around her legs, so he uses his front paws to disentangle her. Sorry about your sheets. I'll buy you new ones. He'd expected to have to pay for new bed-related paraphernalia long before now, although he'd definitely expected the reason to be a lot more fun.

Kangaroo!Clark smells familiar too. And it helps keep April calm.

Me neither. Usually LOLs are instantaneous.

She lifts one leg, than the other as Clark works to disentangle her. There is a soft snort from April as he apologizes for the sheets. Don't worry about the sheets. We can't go out like this!

It's a good thing I don't have classes on Tuesdays, he thinks to her, because that would be the worst. But he hopes they can get this straightened out by tomorrow, because Professor Fine might get suspicious if he skips out of class the second day.

Not to mention their upcoming Valentine's Day slash birthday make-up date.

What should we do?

If we could get to the Nexus, we would freeze time here. Because April does have classes later in the day. And is no way attending as a deer.

She looks at her... hooves. And then to his almost-human paws. Can you use the PINpoint?

Maybe. He wiggles his fingers, as best as he can, because his paws are fairly small and his claws are sharp. I can try anyway.

He lowers himself to all fours again and lopes over to where his jeans are lying on the floor, and roots through the pockets for his PINpoint. It takes him a few tries to get it out of the fabric, and realizes he's going to have nowhere to put it, since only female kangaroos have pouches. I might lose it. My hands are too small to carry it all day. He looks around to see if she has anything suitable, like a camera case, that he could slip it into and carry it around his neck.

April jumps off the bed. That is the nice thing about being a deer, she can jump gracefully and not break anything when she lands.

She heads over to the vanity, and uses her teeth to pull down her purse by its strap. And brings it over to Kangaroo!Clark. This should work.

His ears flatten a little in mild embarrassment. Um... maybe you could wear it then. It's bad enough he has to go out in public as a kangaroo. He doesn't want to be a kangaroo with a purse. Because he will never, ever live that down. Not to mention the endless line of pouch jokes that are sure to follow.

If April could smirk, she would. Instead there is a soft winney of amusement. As long as you can drape it over my neck. I am fine wearing it.

He grabs the purse, and after a few tries, manages to get it over her ears and around her neck. Opening it is a lot easier, too, although he has to put the PINpoint down and use both paws.

There's one other thing. Um, if we go there and we change back, we'll probably be a bit... naked.

Her ears flatten at that statement. Lets not go somewhere public then.

He has a little bit of a hard time seeing the screen, since it's so small and his arms are fairly short, so he can't hold it up in front of his face while he types. And he presses a few wrong buttons before he manages to select the coordinates for a nice grassy field he knows about in the Nexus, where there shouldn't be too many people.

Should we tell anyone? he asks, as he hops a little closer to touch her in order to teleport them both.

Would it help? April knows that in most cases that a LOL has to run its course. And doesn't want to needlessly worry anyone.

I don't know. I just don't want people to worry... or to laugh at us.

The PINpoint transports them to the field, with vast expanses of grass for miles, and ringed with tall trees. There's no one around, and it's a bright sunny day, not too warm for those with fur. Clark immediately feels a bit better, not having a low roof over his head, and straightens up on his hind legs to get a good look around. Perfect.

Those back home won't know we are gone. And I just... don't want to return normal with someone else here. April doesn't mind being naked around Clark. But doesn't want to display the whole package.

The sun feels nice. And there is so many nice smells in the field.

Me either. He still feels like there's something they could do about it, but with LOLs, there usually isn't.

And now that he's having time to adjust to the fact that he has a tail, it's not too bad being a kangaroo. Especially since he still has some semblance of hands. How're you holding up? With the... hooves and all.
